Truly Unique Marriage Proposal

George get set up to proposeLast night Katlyn and I had the privilege of helping Kerry Keller out with the first ever marriage proposal at Truly Unique Country Weddings. George (pictured) proposed to his girlfriend (now fiance) Kirsten after sending her on a scavenger hunt ala Bourne/Da Vinci Code.
Truly Unique Country Wedding Proposal

We helped him light 300+ candles around the Truly Unique Country Weddings site only to have it rain by the time Kirsten got there. That being said, it was still very romantic and the main thing is that she said yes!

Unique wedding proposal setupWe're working on putting some video together from this very special occassion for George and Kirsten as well as Kerry at TUC Weddings and our blog. Stay tuned.

Cold Feet and Wedding Insurance

Here's a video from Howcast user Rose Viggiano called How To Deal With Cold Feet Before Your Wedding. It's actually a very practical look at the decision process you should go through if you're getting cold feet. You can have a watch below.

At the end of the video they mention wedding insurance that's available against cold feet, so I checked it out. There doesn't seem to be an option available in Canada, but I did find wedsafe.com who provide a variety of wedding related insurance policies. They even have stories about clients that have used the services and what they've used them to cover.

So for all you worry warts out there, you can even insure your wedding. Hopefully you won't need it!

How To Be a Buff Bride

Fitness is always on the minds of brides. It's only natural that everyone wants to look great on their wedding day. Here's a video from Howcast user Rose Viggiano explaining step by step how to be a buff bride.

One cool tip comes at the very end of the video - hide a weight in the bouquet during your pictures to make your arms look buff - who woulda thunk it?

Use Our RSVP Service - Help Us Save The Environment!

Not sure why we never thought about it before, but the Tree Hugging Family opened our eyes to the fact that our RSVP services are helping to save the environment! Sure they never mentioned our service and promote another one instead (we forgive you, we're just little guys starting out) but it made us take notice nevertheless.

This post from the Tree Hugging Family made us realize that a lot of people still send out a ton of reply cards with their invitations. We came up with an online RSVP service for our wedding because it was easy, cost effective, and kind of cool. I'm a bit of a tech junky, so I thought an online RSVP service would make us look cool. We never really even thought that people still include reply cards with their invitations. It just seemed like an unneccessary cost with the availability of email and the telephone these days.

So if you're looking to do your part for the environment, give our wedding website and RSVP services a chance!

Vegetarian and Organic Wedding Menu Ideas From Tree Hugging Family

There's a blog on the b5 network called Tree Hugging Family. They're currently doing a series on green weddings. I think it's kind of a cool idea. Katlyn and I probably wouldn't consider ourselves "Tree Huggers" but when you're faced with the option of doing something eco-friendly vs. non eco-friendly, why not do a little good?

The first thing that caught my eye was the organic or vegetarian wedding menu ideas they put together. If you're looking for a unique way to tell a story with your wedding reception, planning a green wedding meal might be the way to go. Have a look at the post here.

We'll try to keep you updated on the cool stuff Tree Hugging Family is churning out.

Wedding Video Tool at Animoto

In my travels I stumbled upon a neat tool that can be used to turn your pictures into videos at http://www.animoto.com/.

It's kind of a cool idea to take pictures from your wedding or engagement, set them to some music and share them with friends. It's free to sign up and it seems as though you can make as many videos as you like.

They've put together a pretty decent library of songs you can use in the videos, or you can upload your own MP3's.

Basically all you have to do is select a few pictures that you want used in the video. You can either upload them from your computer or if you already have them on sites like Facebook or Flickr they can grab them from there too. The next step is to pick your music, and then Animoto puts your video together for you.

The whole process takes about 15 minutes max.

The only downside is that if you want to make a video longer than 30 seconds it will cost you $3, or you can get unlimited videos for a year for $30.

Here's a couple videos I created from our wedding pictures:

A sort of do-it-yourself cake topper

I found when ordering the letters for our initials for the top of our cake it cost a lot more to get the ones embellished with Swarovski crystals but I really liked the look of them. So off to Michaels I went to see what they had that might solve my problem and of course they an answer, they had individual swarovski crystals in many colors to fit any theme and with a little glue I had the letters I wanted.

It may have required a little craftiness on my part and a decision on pattern but in the end they got to look like I wanted and looked great! So when considering the letters as a cake topper, keepWedding Cake Toppers in mind you can order the plain ones and have them look just as great if not better than the much more costly embellished ones with a little work!

To the right is a picture of the letters that I decorated myself.

A Great Way To Get Wedding Flower Ideas

Regina Flower ShowsMost flower shops have a day or two each year where they showcase their best wedding bouquets and centerpieces; so bring your camera this is a great day to get lots of ideas for styles and colors! These are ones you can touch and feel and ask questions in person to get a really god idea of what you would like for yourself.

In Regina the Wascana Flower Shoppe has theirs each year in March, call to ask the exact date, this is the best display I’ve seen as they do more modern work. I also know that Grower Direct has had their showcase at the end of January to check that one out as well.

For others in your area or for exact dates give the flower shops a call and ask if they have a wedding flower display and go check them out. They are a great option for getting ideas!

Picking The Right Flowers For Your Wedding

Wedding Flowers in SeasonWhen picking the flowers you want it is important to ask your florist what flowers are in season and which are not. There would be nothing worse for you to find out after months of trying to decide on the perfect flowers that one was not available to you for your wedding. Also picking flowers in season can also save you money because of the ease of access to them at the time and as well as ensuring the quality.

I found a couple sites that had a fair amount of flowers listed and their seasons at http://weddings.about.com/od/weddingflowers/a/Season.htm or http://www.elegala.com/flowers-season.html. Asking your florist will give you more specific information pertaining to their availability and what they have access to.

Honeymoon Gift Registries - A Neat Alternative to a Traditional Wedding Registry

I have little experience with these websites but was intrigued when I saw a couple I know registered at thebigday.com for their wedding. The idea behind these sites is for the couple to register their honeymoon as a gift instead of the traditional gifts.

On thebigday.com the trip is broken down into parts, such as the flight, romantic dinners, breakfast in bed or even sun screen. There is also no need to worry about some of the items being out of price range of all your friends and family because things like the flight which on their registry would have cost someone $1,530 but thebigday.com allows you it to be broken into 18 different parts and only having a cost of $85 which allows everyone to pitch in.

Many of the sites allow you to set up a website or blog for you to communicate with friends and family about the wedding too, which is a handy extra feature. Many of the sites allow you to view samples of possible registries which can give you a good idea of what can be done with each registry. Some of the most popular include:

Thebigday.com

Honeymoonwishes.com

Thehoneymoon.com

There are also registries where instead of guests picking what part of your honeymoon they would like to contribute to, their contribution goes strictly towards the entire cost of the honeymoon. These sites are a little less fun and less interactive but do accomplish the same thing.

I like the idea of these sites and they are perfect for those couples who have been together for a long time and already have everything they need in their house or those who just love to travel!

A little dress shop in Regina, Saskatchewan

I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect dress for our wedding last August, going to every store in Regina, Saskatoon and even searching over Christmas at home in Red Deer and Edmonton to find it. I checked places out more than once but couldn’t find more than one maybe two dresses that I liked when I passed by a smaller dress shop in downtown Regina. It is a fairly new shop and is not well known for how great this little place is!

It is called NWL and is downtown on Hamilton Street, the atmosphere when you walk in is a more modern feel and they have great party dresses and formal evening wear. My favorite thing about this store was the absence of dresses stuffed on the rack in plastic bags and the staff that doesn’t believe you can dress yourself.

The store mainly carries Mikaella gowns which are Canadian designed gowns not carried by many stores in Canada can be viewed at http://www.mikaellabridal.com/. So not only does NWL offer you a quality dress at a good price but also a dress that you may not see every bride wear making your dress remarkable! I also had trouble finding a modern veil and after going into one store and seeing what they had to offer when I asked for an elbow to finger tip length white simple veil I went back to NWL to see what they had. The owner was working that day and she took me over to the veils picked out her favorite and told me the designer and all about the veil something the other stores couldn’t do, and it was exactly what I wanted; one layer and simple with gorgeous but simple details on the bottom.

To sum it up, the store reminds me of a big city specialty store in a small city with small city prices. They know a lot about their product and it shows that they have a passion for what they sell and want you to have the best! So if you are shopping for your wedding gown, accessories or a dress for a special occasion NWL is the place to go!

NWL’s website is http://www.nwlfashion.com/

Wedding Favours – Think Clever, Cheap, and Easy

Wedding Favour Ideas - Do it yourself with SkittlesWedding favour ideas have caused anxiety for many brides while planning their weddings. When we were planning our wedding, we wanted to make our own wedding favours in an attempt to save some money. After considering a number of options, we settled on a small bag of Skittles for each guest, with a tag attached with ribbon displaying our names and wedding date.

We settled on Skittles because the small ‘S’ on the candies also represented the first letter of both our last names. That made the idea a little bit clever and tied a personal connection to the favours. People tend to remember the story more than they remember the item.

A few people in our wedding party helped us in the making of our favours. We purchased little plastic pouches to hold the Skittles, ribbon to fasten them shut, and printed the tags on card stock from the local craft store. We made funnels with newspaper to help easily pour the Skittles into the bags, and curled the ribbon using scissors.

Making your own wedding favours can be more cost effective than buying them pre-made, and are often easier to make than you’d think. The most important thing to remember is to make your idea clever and people will love it.

If you’re looking to purchase wedding favours, or are just looking for some ideas, we would recommend you visit Weddingfavours.ca.

Stress Free Weddings – The Keys to Survival

Stress Free WeddingsThe thought of all those months of planning coming down to one day can be quite daunting. I know the days leading up to our wedding were crazy, but everything turned out just fine and we had a great day. But there are a few things that we would like to pass along to you brides and grooms to be to help ease the stress level for your big wedding day.

1. Start Your Wedding Planning Early

We started planning and doing the work for our wedding fairly early but we still ran into a time crunch. As the old saying goes, “don’t leave till tomorrow what you can do today”. If you find yourself saying you’ve got lots of time to get this thing or that thing done, you’ll end up leaving it until it’s too late.

2. Don’t Expect Perfection

Chances are if something doesn’t go quite right, the only people that notice will be you, your fiancĂ©, and your wedding planner. Everyone else is usually just so happy for you that they’re willing to overlook what you might think is something major.

3. Remember to Enjoy Your Wedding Day

It might sound like a given, but often weddings go by so fast that you forget to take a deep breath and enjoy it. When we got married we both made a conscious decision that if something wasn’t done the night before, it wasn’t going to get done. That day we just rolled with the punches and had a great time.

The bottom line is that nothing will ever work out exactly the way you want it to. The important thing is to not think about what might have been, but instead enjoy what is.
